What flowers do we choose when we don't know
When we don't know their preferences, we choose fresh flowers in balanced colors and with a message suited to our relationship.

When we want to send flowers but do not know what the person receiving them likes, we do not have to choose at random. We look at a few simple things: how close the relationship is, what the occasion is and what message we want to convey. Often, a bouquet of seasonal flowers in soft colors is more suitable than a very bold choice.
In our flower shop, we often see that people get stuck because of the large number of options. We do not need to know the name of every flower. We can start with a color preference, the desired size, or the way we want the bouquet to feel: warm, cheerful, understated, or romantic. From there, the choice becomes much easier.
We begin with the relationship between us
If we send flowers to a loved one, we can choose roses, tulips or a mixed bouquet in more intense shades. Red conveys a fairly clear romantic message, so we use it when we are sure it is appropriate. For a relationship in its early stages or for a person whose preferences we do not know much about, pink, white, peach and light purple are easier to match.
For a colleague, relative, friend or someone we want to thank, we usually choose cheerful but not overly personal flowers. A bouquet with alstroemeria, lisianthus, gerbera or seasonal flowers can convey thoughtfulness without creating confusion. If the occasion is a sad one, we avoid very striking colors and choose a simple arrangement with white, cream or green.
The reason we are sending the bouquet matters too. For an anniversary, we can be bolder with the colors and shape. For thank-you gestures, bright bouquets with open flowers and a fresh look are a good choice. If there is no particular occasion, a medium-sized mixed bouquet is one of the safest choices, because it seems neither too formal nor too intimate.
Why we often choose mixed bouquets
When we do not know someone's favorite flower, a mixed bouquet helps us maintain balance. Flowers with different shapes add volume, while greenery ties them together. We can combine one main flower, a few smaller flowers and green elements without making the bouquet look crowded. In addition, a mixed bouquet can be adapted more easily to the season and to the flowers available that day.
We also consider how well the flowers hold up together. Roses, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums and some varieties of lisianthus usually last well in a vase if they are fresh and cared for properly. Tulips and freesias look very appealing, but they behave differently after being cut and may continue to open or curve their stems. This is not a defect, but simply how they develop.
Sometimes we choose a bouquet with many buds, while other times we choose one with flowers that are already open. If the bouquet needs to impress immediately, we opt for flowers that already have a few petals unfolded. If we want the person to enjoy it over the following days, we also include buds that will open gradually. The important thing is for the leaves to be firm, the stems not to be soft, and the petals not to have dry edges or spots.
Colors help us when we have no preferences
Light colors are the easiest to send when we do not know what the recipient prefers. White and cream create a clean, discreet look, pink is warm without being too strong, and peach brings a touch of cheerfulness. We can combine these shades with simple greenery, so the flowers remain the center of attention.
If the person is known to be energetic and cheerful, we can choose yellow, orange or bright pink. For someone more reserved, pastel colors and an airy shape work better. We do not have to guess their personality perfectly. It is enough to avoid very strong contrasts when we have no clue about their tastes.
We also think about where the bouquet might end up. A very large arrangement can be difficult to place in a small apartment or on a desk. Strongly scented flowers can be bothersome in an enclosed room, especially if the person is sensitive to smells. If we know they have cats, we avoid lilies, as they can be dangerous for them. When we do not know such details, we choose flowers with a subtle fragrance and pollen that does not fall easily.
What we check before delivery
A well-chosen bouquet should also arrive in good condition. We check the stems, leaves and petals before preparing the flowers. A fresh stem is firm, while the leaves are not soft or yellowed. For roses, we look at the edges of the petals, for gerberas, we check whether the stem stands straight, and for tulips, we observe whether the flower is intact and has no bruised petals.
We remove the leaves that would end up in the water because they get dirty quickly and can affect the water in the vase. We trim the stems a little before arranging them, especially if the flowers have been without water for a while. After receiving the bouquet, the recipient can place it in a clean vase with fresh water and repeat the stem trimming after a few days.
The delivery location matters just as much as the choice of flowers. We do not leave the bouquet near a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a very warm room, because the petals become soft and the flowers wilt faster. If we send flowers to Iasi on a cold or very hot day, we take into account the time spent in transit and how they are protected until they reach the recipient.
When we do not know what to choose, we can give the florist three simple details: who the bouquet is for, what the occasion is, and which colors we want to avoid. If we also add a size limit, the choice becomes almost clear. A seasonal mixed bouquet, in balanced shades, with a short and sincere message, is usually more suitable than a composition chosen only because it looks good in a photograph.
